overview

Ferrari partnered with Mood Media to improve the digital experience in its dealerships worldwide as part of a corporate identity revamp. Together, our teams collaborated with Ferrari's Corporate Marketing and Dealership Sales to design, develop, and install advanced features.

the problem

To begin the project, Mood's teams collected feedback from Ferrari Sales Consultants about their current sales process. We discovered that the Consultants lacked the necessary tools and technology to effectively communicate the Ferrari story, which didn't align with the sophistication of the brand. This feedback guided our strategy to develop an elevated AV solution.

Ferrari associates had limited ability to manage content within dealerships and wanted to provide a more in-depth experience for Ferrari customers.

The Solution

Based on Mood Media’s player to player device technology, create a content library application with on-demand playing capabilities. This interactive application will allow associates within Ferrari dealerships to manage content across multiple displays featuring the following capabilities:

  • Select media zones within the dealership

  • View and access available content

  • Play videos, playlists or images

  • Playlist creation

  • Content queue

The process

  • Created a design project proposal

  • Full project build using project proposal as a foundation

  • Initial design iterations

  • Post-release updates

Design proposal

Initially, a high fidelity design was created as a visual representation of an interactive solution for a Ferrari project proposal. This included user flows, full high fidelity mockups and a prototype and demo video featuring the specified components outlined by Mood Media’s product and sales teams.

featured capabilities

  • Select a set of screens located within a dealership (zone)

  • Select from a list of categories including models, events, dealer, miscellaneous and new

  • View available media on the connected device & select videos and/or images

  • Play selected media on screen zone & pause or stop playback

Demo Video

ideas to action

Proposal led to full project build. Collaborated with product & development teams on requirements and specifications. Updated the user flow to reflect defined scope and adjusted the design based on client feedback and Ferrari’s brand guidelines.

design build

Design went through a few rounds of iterations before approval

changes from proposal

  • The bulk of the imagery from the initial design proposal was removed because it would require additional content management to keep the imagery current with model releases

  • The zone selection was adjusted to a text-based format - this accommodates different screen setups which can vary from dealership to dealership and allows for individual screen selection

  • Based on the project scope, the categories section was removed and the featured list of models was adjusted for content selection

  • Handed off all design assets and documentation for development

FEatures included:

  • Zone and individual screen selection

  • List of models

  • Search tool

  • Media tabs featuring videos & images

  • Single media selection

  • No content available dialog

  • Timeout dialog

release updates

The initial project scope included additional features as future updates, others were also added based on client feedback. These additional features were integrated through a multi-team collaboration and released across different sets of updates. Responsible for updating the user flows and design to meet the requirements for each release and documented for the product and engineering teams.

media type: playlists

Initially images and videos were the only media types available within the app; however, the client requested the addition of predefined playlists. Ferrari has the ability to create playlists within Mood’s CMS, Harmony, and push them to devices in dealerships. The addition of playlists allows for on-demand playback and a greater variety of content options.

multi-media selection

At the client’s request, the ability to select multiple images and videos or a combination was incorporated. The interface was adjusted to display the number of each selected media type along with the ability to select all images or videos. Due to a limitation outlined by the product and development teams, only one playlist can play at a time; therefore, playlists were not included as part of the multi-media selection feature.

Ferrari has events at its dealerships which involves displaying featured content. Prior, a Ferrari associate or Mood content manager would schedule the feature content within Mood’s CMS; however, it did not provide Ferrari associates with instant access. With the addition of adhoc playlists, Ferrari associates are able to create a custom, on-demand playlist and instantly push it live to the selected device without having to login to Mood’s CMS.

adhoc playlists

entire zone selection

The client requested the ability to select not only single screens located within a zone of the dealership but the ability to select all screens within a zone. This allows Ferrari associates to directly push content live to an entire zone within the dealership which is especially beneficial when a dealer hosts an event.

The interface was adjusted to include the ability to loop playback of selected media. This addition allows Ferrari associates to loop individual media playback along with adhoc playlists which greatly impacted how Ferrari dealers handle dealership events. Prior, a dealer would have to manage looped playback through Mood’s CMS or request Mood’s content management team schedule.

loop playback

now playing features

A now playing bar was incorporated to allow users to manage and select now playing content. It includes the ability to manage single media playback, add multiple media to a queue, loop playback, end looped playback, view content within a custom created adhoc playlist, add images or videos to a queue and end adhoc playlist playback.

The client requested the ability to alert users of newly added media and to distinguish new content from old. After new content is added, upon login, a user will receive a dialog listing new content by model and title. This information can also be accessed by selecting the notification icon in the upper right corner of the app. When no new content has been added within a set timeframe, and the icon is selected, a dialog will notify the user that no new content has been added in β€œx” days. All newly added content thumbnails display a tag/label of β€œnew”.

notifications

pin entry

A pin entry was incorporated to ensure only Ferrari associates have access to the content library and to provide an extra layer of security. When the default home loop is tapped, the pin screen appears - a correct pin launches the application, while an invalid pin produces an entry error.

device battery status

The client requested the addition of the device’s battery status within the app so it would be clearly indicated and easily viewable while in use. This allows Ferrari associates to monitor the device’s charge status and recharge as needed.

The big picture

The final solutions package included core AV hardware and software, including ultra-high-definition LCD screens, standard and mosaic video walls, custom music programming, premium Bose sound systems and advanced AV control systems. Optional enhancements and accessories were available depending on the size and budget of each dealership.

β€œOur fully-fledged showroom delivers a unique experience of the Ferrari universe. It is a hub for customers, prospects and enthusiasts to enjoy, but also to appreciate the particularity of every vehicle, to connect and understand the heritage of our brand and to develop relationships.”

β€” Mervyn Eagles, CEO, Scuderia South Africa

post-mortem

This was a fun project to work on - I really enjoyed working on the different interaction patterns and micro-animations. Unfortunately, some initial concepts, such as vehicle specific hero images, were unable to be implemented due to technical limitations. Some of the additional feature releases were a bit challenging but I enjoyed working closely with engineering to design solutions.
